Hey hey, Gastronomy Gangsters! This December I’m taking us to my Grandmother’s homeland of Portugal! She was from The Azore Islands, Terceira, to be specific. And my grandfather was from Sao George. I was able to visit Lisbon a few years ago when I lived abroad, and so I feel compelled to take us here on one of our edible adventures around the world! Feijoada is a warm, comfort food my grandmother used to make us in the wintertime. It’s a hearty stew filled with beans, linguica, and more pork. Brazilians and mainland Portugal tend to use black beans for their feijoada, but we typically use white, as it is more traditional to the Azores. This dish also has roots in Africa due to Portuguese colonization. I promise that this is the next best thing to a big hug from Grandma! So come elevate Grandma’s homestyle recipe with me!
